![]() ![]() This means to set up a BO ship, power management is another thing to keep in mind.I have 4 Krenim now (added a 2nd Tactical), 2 K13, 1 Special Borg (my 1st officer), and a K-13 Android (I don't really use Andrea though). Now don’t get me wrong: as I said earlier, BFAW still has a very useful place for tanking ships to draw aggro, and one thing that the BO skill writeup omits to mention is the much higher power consumption (50% more than normal). I’ve gone ahead and altered the beam setup on 3 or 4 toons who fly big cruisers, and the extra punchiness is immediately noticeable. Since BFAW Cruisers have been a staple of STO for so long, the BO change signals a pretty fundamental change in ship builds. I wish Cryptic can be a bit more conscientious about maintaining game balance with stuff like this. This is particularly true of Superweapon Ingenuity: I feel this Trait is a necessity to truly put BO on par with BFAW, and there’s no way I’m spending 400M EC on a ship trait. ![]() All the other traits are tied to expensive Lobi or Lockbox ships, which is annoying. If your Fed toon wants this trait, it’s from the Exchange. Of these, only the Mat’Ha Raptor is a C-Store ship - and only available to KDF toons. Crescent Wave Discharge (Elachi S’ateth Escort) - BO or Pilot skills build charges, and fire a massive blast at 3 stacks.Overwhelming Force (Mat’Ha Raptor) - BO creates a weaker version of Charged Particle Burst.Kemocite Overload (Xindi Aquatic Biostrys) - BO triggers a 2km radius explosion that deals radiation damage and reduces enemy damage resistance.Superweapon Ingenuity (Xindi Primate Ateleth) - Increases BO duration by 5 seconds.Directed Energy Flux (Husnock warship) - Use Temporal BOff or Directed Energy Modulation skill adds +25% bonus damage to BO for 15 seconds. Most importantly, they are both easily accessible via C-Store ships, which helps make BFAW layouts much easier to achieve.īut for BO? The big ones (i.e. Entwined Tactical Mattrices (from the MW Battlecruisers) - Using BFAW (or Cannon Scatter Volley) applies Torpedo Spread 1.īoth of these traits are extremely useful for BFAW layouts.Redirecting Arrays (from the Tactical MW Cruisers) - Taking damage extends the duration of BFAW, up to 5 additional seconds for a total of 15.For example, two of the most significant BFAW Traits are: That being said, Traits still lean in favor of BFAW. Besides, in boss fights there is no contest between BO and BFAW.īO builds are now viable - interestingly, there are a lot more Ship Traits that benefit BO than BFAW, which I think is a result of Cryptic trying to make BO more attractive over the years. Sure, BO requires a bit more micromanagement, as you have to be constantly switching targets in a big fight, but there is something satisfying about deleting an enemy in one or two BO shots. Useful enough, in fact, to be competitive with, and in some cases better than BFAW. Overloaded beams fire only at half the normal rate to compensate, but this makes BO much more useful against single targets than ever before. Now, instead of the skill benefiting a single beam shot, it remains in effect for all beam shots for 10 seconds - that’s the same duration as BFAW. Seriously, why would you use a single shot skill like BO, when BFAW can shoot at a large number of targets for a period of time, albeit at lower accuracy and damage?Īfter a long, long wait, Cryptic finally changed up Beam Overload. Beam Overload, or BO for short, which overloads a single shot to 3 or 4 times the normal damage, has always been relegated to an “undesirable” status. And Three, it’s a great tool to draw aggro, especially if you are a big beefy tanky cruiser. Two, you are targeting and taking out swarms of lesser enemies at once. This is popular for a couple of good reasons: One, you are hitting something with beam arrays that may be out of their firing arcs. Of course, BFAW=Beam Fire-at-Will, the ubiquitous BOff skill that lets you shoot at multiple targets for the duration of the ability. The reason this is a significant change is because traditionally, “BFAW Cruisers” are a mainstay concept in STO. Regardless, it’s a pretty important change, so for new players who may be confused by this… should you use it? If you haven’t been sleeping on the job like I did with Star Trek Online for most of 2019, you probably already know about the Beam Overload changes made back in August 2019. ![]()
